initially the standard and long range were priced almost the same (only about $500 difference – not sure why VinFast did that) so there would be no reason to pick the standard range

There are quite a few alternatives to the VF8 from known brands but the VF9 – if they deliver at the original price – would be the only “affordable” full 3 row EV. That’s what got me looking.

From what i read the WLTP is about 10% more optimistic than EPA.

So the 273 miles would be around 240, which is still decent. Same with the VF9 369 would become about 330.

But I guess they missed the 240 mark by 25% and only get 180. I really doubt they can recoup that much with just SW tweaks. So my bet is that the next batch won’t achieve their…

I think they just can’t meet the range that they promised so they listed the first batch at 180 miles and I guess they hope they can improve on the SW side to get back to closer than the range they claimed.

Also all their published 200+ range are WLPT which is usually more optimistic than the EPA.

On the vinfast website looks like the listed prices went up VF8 $59k (+$2k) VF9 76.9k (+$900).

I agree it’s most likely the same hardware as the standard VF8 but would they want to actively limit the range? Just to sell the extra range later? The 180 miles figure is causing them some bad PR now so that doesn’t seem worth it.

According to Wikipedia their smaller e34 gets 285km NEDC for 44.5kWh battery size.

Apparently that corresponds to about 125 miles EPA, i.e. 0.35kWh/mile. (that’s not good for example the Ioniq5 AWD is about 0.30kWh/mile EPA).

If the VF8 that’s a bigger motor, much heavier than the e34 and AWD takes 40% more power, that would get to 0.49kWh/mile or…

Another odd thing is when I chatted with a representative they said that the city edition has the standard 87.7kWh battery. So it’s possible they just designed a very inefficient car and they can only get 180 miles EPA of range out of the standard battery, so they had to rebrand it as “City Edition” in a rush.

Yes I was wondering that too. But I think for charging a lot of the numbers from the manufacturer are “up to” numbers and getting 3rd party data of real life charging curve is more useful.

One of the reps on the online chat still said Q1-Q2 for CA for the VF9. We’ll have to wait and see 🤞

The specs list a 10-70% in 35min for the VF9 extended range. That would give an average of 125kW. So the peak is probably around 150kW but most likely not 250 or 350. I’m sure we’ll know more when the first vehicles are in the hands of the customers 🙂

The difference is that Hyundai has dealerships all over the US. If you pick up your car in CA, drive away and it needs some servicing you’d have to go back to CA with it… Especially a new model may have recalls.

Yes the rep confirmed to me that the prices for the Eco and Plus trims we locked to the ones pre-Sept. 1 2022. But I’ll believe it when I actually get my car 🙂 Technically they may not honor the $3000/$5000 voucher if they deliver after end of 2023.

I don’t think the tax credit ends on 12/31/22. Even if you get the delivery in 2023 (or later) as long as you had the binding agreement signed it should be fine. At least that’s what I understand

Yes, not having to deal with dealers markups will be nice. That will be a lot of work for them to set up all the dealerships garages equipped for the maintenance themselves.

That’s not too bad of a timeframe as long as they don’t deliver a VF9 “City Edition” like they did for the VF8 😉

Same here. I still really hope to get the VF9 before end of 2023. I think it will also depend if you’re in CA or somewhere else in the US.

Usually the 12V battery is very cheap and easy to change, but I would not expect issues with it on new cars.

I’d read that the maintenance is lower overall as there is no oil change and less breaks changes, but the tires need replacing faster as the car is heavier.

Does someone know the tire size for the VF8/VF9? Hope there will be affordable replacement options 🙂

I did that too, the $200 isn’t too much of a risk for a possible $7,500 upside. I assume VF will be eligible again once they start producing from the NC factory but that will take a while
