Charging VF8 during hot summer
40 VF PointsMember08/02/2023 at 02:17I picked up my car in early March and been charging inside my garage with no problem. Lately, I noticed it had been taking longer to charge. I plugged in my car at 9:35pm from 62% at 32amp. The following morning at 7am, it was still charging at 82% and the battery was 100F degree. Our garage was hot, and it felt like a sauna inside VF8.
I did a quick experiment below the next day:
I left my car in the garage at first to test at 9:05pm, and it needed 7 hr 34 mins to charge to 90% from 52%. At 9:54pm, it said 10hr 9 mins to reach 90%.
I moved the car outside, and at 10:09pm it said 7hr 40 mins left. Then at 10:48pm, it said 5hr 17 mins left and battery temp was greatly decreased from 96 to 89F.
Lesson learned: charge your car outside the garage to optimize charging time especially in summer. If you do have to charge inside garage, please leave doors open or keep the place well ventilated.

Seriously why would you lease a car that you can’t charge inside your garage during summer time? Not only it is inconvenient but also you’re asking intruders to pay a visit if you need to put a shade over the vehicle while charging

I charged VF8 inside garage just fine during winter. I usually charge my car at night so no shade needed.
I see several people in my neighborhood charge their EVs: Tesla, Chevy, Polstar etc outside of their garage. I dont think this is just a VinFast problem.
May I ask what EV do you have and where do you charge yours?

The primary reason that people have chargers installed on an exterior of the house because of the fear of potential fire hazard which is common with EVs but the failure rate is exponential small and I mean very, very small. Poor quality battery system integration, and thermal escape can lead to high leakage that would generate a significant amount of heat and put the system in overload protection. I do own a Model 3 and a Vinfirst reservation and have never once charged the car outside regardless of times of the day or seasonal dependence. That’s not to say that M3 doesn’t get hot because it does but Tesla has mastered the heat management system to the point that it’s no longer an inconvenience for owners.

I have same problem charging my VF8 at evgo charging statetions in afternoon. The battery temp getting too hot
112F degree and the charging speed reduce to only 22 Kw.

It’s good to know, Natalie, thanks for the sharing. High temperature definitely slow down the charging speed on any EV, VF will be the same.

I’m also experiencing the same problem, extremely slow charging in hot weather, ambient above 100 degrees. The charging rate is reduced to 1-2kw on a 7kw charger. Battery temperature is 100+ degrees.
VinFast please fix this problem now, other EVs dont have this same problem. My Ford Focus Electric still charged at decent speed when hot.
