Vietnamese automaker VinFast continues its North American rollout with two new all-electric models first revealed at the Consumer Electronics Show last January. Within 48 hours of opening reservations for the VinFast VF 8 and VF 9 earlier this year, the company received 24,000 pre-orders globally. In September, Vinfast announced its first 100 VF 9 customers took delivery of their EVs.

Overview of VinFast VF 9 Electric Car

A wide-shouldered SUV with Italian design influence, the VinFast VF 9 should appeal to American full-size SUV customers. It is designed by Pininfarina—which collaborated on this project—and has a conventionally (but beautifully) styled interior. The VinFast VF 9 is not expected to take on higher-end crossovers such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE, but instead should target mid-range models like Ford’s Everest.

    Neat Interior, Spacious Cabin

The interior of the VinFast VF 9 is clean and minimalist, making the most of a minimum number of physical controls—a large landscape central display that measures 15.6 inches diagonally is the focal point of the cabin. The designers have kept physical buttons to the bare minimum. Seats in the cockpit and passenger compartment are covered with soft leather.

VinFast has invested considerably in the application of eco-friendly materials—such as eco-leatherette—for use in its interiors. VinFast has also utilized several solutions to reduce water waste and chemical emissions in manufacturing. Its strategy for managing battery recycling takes into account the environmental impacts of its manufacturing process, in order to encourage sustainability.

The VinFast VF 9 SUV will seat 6 or 7 passengers, depending on which version you opt for. The more luxurious—and thus pricier— of these models is expected to come with massage chairs for rear-seat passengers.

The dashboard is spare, with only the aforementioned touchscreen and two air vents mounted in the center. The console also has push-button gear selector controls. There’s a heads- up display (HUD) for the driver as well.

The VinFast VF 9 car’s powerful exterior

The collaboration between VinFast and legendary Italian design firm Pininfarina has resulted in a stunning front end. With integrated daytime running lights and Matrix LED headlights, it stands out regardless of the angle from which it is viewed. The most striking features of the vehicle are its LED spear on the front end and a “V” shaped tail light at the rear—a strip of shiny black plastic with a big chrome “V” badge at its center.

The VF 9’s overall dimensions are approximately 201 inches by 78 inches by 67 inches. If the dimensions of the vehicle don’t change significantly in the production trim, that will put it in about the same size category as other non-electric SUVs—the Chevrolet Traverse, Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride. The VF 9 has similar features to the BMW X7, Volvo XC90, and Mercedes GLS.

The rear design of the VinFast VF9 was inspired by two of the company’s petrol-powered models—the VinFast Lux SA2.0 and Lux A2.0—so it should be easy to identify as an electric car from a distances. Parking sensors and a rear-view camera are installed on the back of the vehicle.

    A 402 Horsepower Engine

With out-of-the-box dual motor all-wheel drive, the VF 9 offers premium power and performance without compromise. Because of its large size and massive battery, the VinFast VF 9 is heft—so much so that it can’t be powered by one motor alone. Instead, it uses two: one (producing 402 horsepower) provides more power while another with 640Nm torque is used to handle heavy loads.

Despire its size, rhe car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, which is a full second second faster than the VinFast VF 8—its sibling.

Comfort Infotainment System & Advanced Technology

The SUV’s large 15.6-inch touch screen reduces the amount of physical buttons, allowing the driver to navigate easily and comfortably on any roadway.

VinFast’s VF 9 comes equipped with a full-color front warning display, which displays useful information about the driver’s surroundings—such as speed limits, lane guidance and approaching obstacles.

    Conclusion

VinFast seems to be making a serious commitment to the American transition from fossil fuels. The VF 9, its flagship EV, will lure SUV buyers with a luxurious interior perfect for road trips, worry-free long distance travel—and savings on purchase options. It could turn out to be a great value-for-money product.

Overall, the VinFast VF 9 will appeal to electric car enthusiasts—but would it be your first choice? Leave us a comment below and let us know!

I don’t have the specs but I took a look at the VF9 at the LA Auto show and the third row is flat against the floor when in use. So unlike other cars with a third row folds into the floor, it looks like this will be on top of the floor and won’t gain a lot of cargo space from it.
