It may have taken time to build momentum, but the electric vehicle revolution is undoubtedly underway. A large array of new models has entered the market, and in some states, such as California, EVs represent 18% of new sales. But if you are lining up to buy one, what do you need to think about? Here are the five key things to consider when purchasing an EV.

    1. Range

You will have heard of range anxiety and should ensure that the EV you buy can cover the distance you require in one charge. Certainly, you need to be realistic and remember the need to refuel a gas-driven car but note that many EVs today can cover at least 200 miles on one charge. For example, the VinFast mid-size SUV targets 292 miles.

    2. Charging

Next, look at your charging options. If you intend to charge at home, consider buying a level 2 charger, which is a good compromise. Look for level 3 chargers at public stations on the road. If your new vehicle can charge using that technology, you may get up to 80% of capacity in only 30 minutes.

    3. Maintenance

While an EV may not have as many moving mechanical parts as a conventional car, you still need to consider maintenance. You’ll eventually need to replace the battery pack, so look for good deals that can cut down on such costs when buying the vehicle.

    4. Space Considerations

If you’re looking for extra space, calculate how much space you need to satisfy your family. Electric vehicles come in all shapes and sizes to cater to all tastes. You can always settle for a smaller electric sedan if you don’t need a seven-seater SUV.

    5. Incentives

Finally, consider the incentives. Manufacturers are keen to solicit your business and will roll out credits, rebates, and other carrots to draw you in. For example, VinFast may offer you a free level 2 charger when you reserve a VF8 or VF9 for a limited time, which could save you money versus buying a charger yourself.
