This is my third electric car, in 2020 I had to mail an application to CA-DMV and pay by check. Now the entire process can be done online at the CA-DMV link, including payment with a credit card. You have to wait until you receive the actual metal license plate, you can’t apply with the paper dealer plate.

Correct. The new way online is seamless. It took only a month from start to finish-receiving the actual stickers in the mail.
