Seven Top Tips for New EV Drivers

Driving an electric vehicle (EV) is not only great for the environment but also a lot of fun. If you’re new to the world of EVs, there are some thing new considerations with which you may want to become more familiar. The experience of driving an EV is, after all, a different way of driving. We’ve gathered advice from experienced (and not so experienced) EV drivers. Here are our top tips to make the most of your electric experience.

Tip #1: Charge at Home If You Can

One of the biggest advantages of owning an EV is the ability to charge it at home. If you have access to a garage or driveway, consider installing a Level 2 charging station. This will allow you to charge your EV faster and more conveniently than with a standard 120-volt outlet. Portable chargers are included with every VinFast eSUVs and offer maximum flexibility when charging at home or on the go. With its included adapters, you can plug into a standard 120V wall receptacle for slower charging (Level 1) or you can install a 240V oven/range receptacle for faster charging (Level 2). Alternatively, you may choose to install a home charger, which offers the fastest charging speeds for your VinFast vehicle (up to 48A). Learn more about your options here

Tip #2: Extreme Temperatures and Other Environmental Factors Affect Range

The range of your EV can vary depending on environmental factors such as temperature, wind, and terrain. Cold conditions may decrease your range by up to 40%, while extreme heat can also reduce range due to the increased use of air conditioning.

In cold weather, it’s important to preheat the cabin while the car is still plugged in so that you don’t use battery energy to heat the cabin. In hot weather, try to park your car in the shade or in a garage to avoid exposing the battery to extreme heat. This will not only improve battery performance but also prolong the life of your battery. Wind and terrain can also affect range, especially at higher speeds. To maximize your range, try to drive at a steady speed and avoid rapid acceleration and hard braking.

Tip #3: Acceleration and Battery Charge

While acceleration in an EV is instant and powerful, it can also affect your range. Rapid acceleration requires more energy and drains your battery faster. If you want to maximize your range, accelerate gradually. This will not only save energy but also prolong the life of your battery.

Tip #4: Plan Your Route

When driving an EV, it’s important to plan your route ahead of time to ensure you have enough range to reach your destination. There are several apps and websites that can help you plan your route while taking into account the location of charging stations along the way—like VinFast’s own app. Designed based on users’ habits and needs, the VinFast app offers a host of smart features, helping you to connect to your easily—find places and get directions, schedule vehicle maintenance and repair, and pay for services safely and easily. Regardless, you should always carry a charging cable with you in case you need a quick charge!

Tip #5: Check Your Tire Pressure

Tire pressure can significantly impact the range of an EV. Underinflated tires create more friction between the tire and the road, which requires more energy to overcome, reducing your range. Overinflated tires can also reduce range, as they create less contact with the road and can cause the vehicle to bounce.

Tip #6: Take Advantage of Regenerative Braking

Regenerative braking is a feature of EVs that allows the car to capture energy that would otherwise be lost during braking. When you step on the brake pedal, the car’s electric motor reverses direction, creating a braking force that slows down the car and generates electricity, which is then sent back to the battery. This not only saves energy but also reduces wear on the brake pads.

Tip #7: Join an EV Forum or Group

Joining an EV forum or group is a great way to connect with other EV owners and learn from their experiences. A number of online forums and Facebook groups are dedicated to EVs. There you can ask questions, share tips, and get advice on everything from charging to maintenance. You can also attend local EV events and meetups to connect with other EV owners in your area.

At VinFast, we are proud to introduce the Global Community Member Benefits program for our valued clientele. This program is designed to provide an exclusive and unparalleled experience for VinFast owners and enthusiasts, while also fostering a sense of community among our loyal customers.

The program has three tiers: Members, Car Owners, and VIPs. To become a member, customers must reserve a VinFast EV. Car Owners have made a full vehicle purchase, and VIP status is reserved for car owners who are active brand ambassadors in the VinFast community.

If you’re a member, you will receive early updates on vehicle promotions, get regular feedback from VinFast on vehicle usage questions, and have the opportunity to attend test drive events, and meet-and-greets with key members of the VinFast team. You also get access to a private online forum where you can share experiences, ask questions, and connect with other VinFast enthusiasts.

As a Car Owner you’ll also be able to participate in themed events such as VinFast’s anniversary and holiday events, as well as gain access to unique offers that will vary by campaign.

In the top tier, VIPs can contribute ideas on the research and development of vehicle and software products, and be considered for invitations to exclusive events for global members in different countries every year, in addition to all previously listed perks.

The Bottom Line

In conclusion, owning an EV can be a rewarding and enjoyable experience. By following these tips, you can maximize your range, prolong the life of your battery, and make the most out of your driving experience.
