My EV Battery Runs Out, Is It Bad For the Long-Term Health of My Car?
Range anxiety is the most common fear among would-be electrical vehicle (EV) drivers. Not only do they wonder if the battery could leave them stranded, but they wonder what the negative impacts of a drained EV battery might be.
The good news is there’s less concern about access to charging stations and EV battery range with every passing month. The bad news is, leaving your electric car parked for a long time with an empty battery can cause your battery to degrade prematurely.
The Honest Truth
First, the hard part: running out of battery power in an EV is a problem. It usually means you’ll need your vehicle towed on a flatbed to a charging site.
The other issue is that anytime a battery of any kind drops below 10%, it can cause lasting damage. This is not a new problem. Even the 12v battery in a conventional gas-powered car will die if you let it drain to empty and leave it for more than a day or two.
However, most manufacturers prevent batteries from dropping below this mark to protect them from undue wear.
Charging Your Electric Car Is Easier Now Than Ever
Even though running out of charge can be detrimental, it’s not likely to happen because charging your EV is much easier than it was five years ago.
For example, the federal government has announced that Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plans are now in place nationwide. Plus, $5 billion of funding dispersed over five years will help roll out thousands of charging stations.
Even charging station start-ups and fuel station owners are rapidly rolling out charge stations across the country. Apps like Electrify America, PlugShare, and ChargePoint all help EV owners find public charging stations nearby.
EV Range Is Better Than You Think
EV manufacturers have also increased the range, with most cars having a range of over 250 miles as a baseline. For example, VinFast electric vehicles offer up to 272 miles of electric range. That’s enough to get from LA to Las Vegas and back on a single charge.
The chances of you being stranded by your EV have never been lower, so put that range anxiety aside and drive by VinFast to learn more about electric vehicles and just how long our EV batteries last.
