Does a Power Outage Impact My EV Battery?
Drivers considering their first electric vehicle sometimes worry about charging their cars during a power outage. The good news is that power outages have a very little real-world effect on EV batteries and EV drivers in general. Here's why.
Can You Charge an EV Battery During a Power Outage?
The short answer is, yes. Obviously, you can't charge at home if you don't have power, but here are some alternatives when you're in a blackout at home:
- Go to a nearby charging station: Most blackouts are highly localized, and more and more charging stations are popping up daily.
- Use backup power: You shouldn't use a portable generator to charge an EV, but you can use large home-back-up batteries and even some larger backup power generators to charge your EV.
You can't pump gas in a blackout either, and so just as with a gas-powered car where you never drain the tank completely, having enough charge on board at all times is good practice. It is also easy to do.
How Does a Power Outage Affect the EV Battery?
Neither a power outage nor a power surge will harm your battery. Most charging systems and VinFast EVs have surge protection built in, so they won't be affected by a sudden spike in power. The power drop is no different from if you unplug your vehicle for any other reason, so it won't hurt your battery.
What to Do in a Power Outage
The VinFast VF 8 has a range of up to 292 miles, and the VF 9 can travel up to 369 miles on a single charge. That's many days of driving range for most American families.
And, because EVs don't create emissions, you can safely sleep in your VinFast for warmth if the heat goes out in your home.
