Can You Charge an EV Battery During a Power Outage?

The short answer is, yes. Obviously, you can't charge at home if you don't have power, but here are some alternatives when you're in a blackout at home:

• Go to a nearby charging station: Most blackouts are highly localized, and more and more charging stations are popping up daily.
• Use backup power: You shouldn't use a portable generator to charge an EV, but you can use large home-back-up batteries and even some larger backup power generators to charge your EV.

Hi, just curious, why do you say “You shouldn’t use a portable generator to charge an EV”?

I have a 6.5kW portable generator, I’d assume I could use it to charge the car at a lower 20A setting.
