How Much Maintenance Does an EV Need?
The fear of the unknown sometimes makes change seem harder than it is. One of the unknowns many drivers face is maintenance. Many who are considering their first electric vehicle wonder what sort of maintenance this emerging technology will need. The good news is that this question is easy to answer, and we'll do so below.
The Real Answer: How Much Maintenance Does an EV Need?
Very little. For example, electric motors don't require oil changes like a conventional gasoline engine. There are still fluids like transmission fluids, battery cooling fluids, and brake fluids that need to be changed, but these changes are few and far between. The rest of the maintenance items on your EV are the same as any other car, things like:
- Tires
- Brakes
- Suspension components
- Wiper blades
- Cabin air filters
These consumables all have different lifespans, but you can expect to do mostly minor work to your EV for much of its life.
Why Does an EV Need Less Maintenance?
An EV motor has very few moving parts, so there are fewer items to service. There are also fewer auxiliary parts like clutches, exhaust systems, fuel filters, oil filters, engine air filters, and timing belts.
Most electric motors are direct drive or have very simple, nearly maintenance-free transmission systems. Even brakes need less maintenance in most electric cars because electric motors recapture energy when you slow down, so the "engine braking" effect is stronger in EVs. Some call this "one-pedal driving."
How Much Should I Expect to Pay for Maintenance
Maintenance on your EV will be cheaper overall than most other cars. Your tires, suspension, and brake services will cost about the same as they would with any other vehicle, and those costs can vary widely.
EV Running Costs Are Lower Overall
The simplicity of EVs is the secret to their lower maintenance requirements and low overall cost of ownership. Drive by VinFast to learn more about our VF 8 and VF 9 zero-emission SUVs.
